When I was 11, I went to a well check up and my pediatrician noticed asymmetry and sent me to get x-rays. A few weeks later I got my x-rays. They never told us the results. A week later, my mom called me and told me the radiologists said I had a 28 degree C curve. A few weeks later I went to an orthopedist at a children’s hospital. My orthopedist said the x-rays were misread and I had a S curve with curves measuring 37 and 31. I was given the option to watch and wait until surgical levels or to get a brace. I chose to get a brace.

A month later, I got my Boston Thoracolumbar Brace. It was challenging adjusting but over time it became less painful and was a way of relieving pain. On May 19th, I had an appointment with my orthopedist to see if my brace works. Unfortunately, my curves got worse. My 31 degree curve maintained. My 37 curve increased to 48 degrees.

Finally, I had a brand new 33 degree curve near my neck. My team and I decided it was time for me to get a spinal fusion. My spine was curving anyway it could and with my genetic background it was likely my curves would continue to get worse.

I’m getting my fusion soon and my MRI is on June 22nd, 2020. I don’t know where I’m getting fused from until my MRI but it’s likely only the thoracic spine will be fused because my bottom curve should correct itself.
